What I’ve been doing

This is now my 5th week at DSM design. Time flies when you’re having fun. In this blog I will tell you what I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks.

B1-K1-W1 TALKS ME TRHOUGH THE PROJECT

When I came in to the company Barry told me that the company needs help with their own portfolio. This is a good upportunity to see how you can present a project in the best way and learn about wordpress and photoshop.

B1-K1-W2 MAKES A PLANNING

For this project Barry gave me as much time as I needed because step one is learning how to make my work perfect, no matter how long it takes. When I’m able to do that I can start working on my speeds and deadlines.

B1-K1-W3 ORIËNTATE ON THE SUBJECT.

Brett is taking me through the project. The portfolio will be for new clients that want to see the work from DSM. The first project I will be presenting is the Harlees project. DSM made a whole new corporate branding. He told me to begin with doing my research. I looked at other companies and was doing research about how they present their work. I made a new document to put in all the content I found and started to see a pattern.

 B1-K1-W4 MAKES THE CONCEPT

I started to make my own webpage design in Indesign. In my research I found a company called Farm design. Their portfolio was so strong and clean that Brett and I decided to use that grid.

 B1-K1-W5 MAKES THE DESIGN

I started to fill in the lay-out with all the Harlees elements and made mock-ups to show of the work even better. The grid was devided in rows and coloms. Everytime I designed a colom Brett would come over and talk me through it and tell me what could be better and what his thoughts where about it. This helped me to have a closer look for detail and learn alot of things about designing, placements, spacing and fonts. If it was all correct and the way we liked it I would continue to the next row. When the whole page was finished we asked Barry for the final check and feedback.

B1-K1-W6 PRESENT THE WORK

The design page was made into a PDF and sent to Barry for the final check. Me and Brett went through te page and told him our vision and why we made surtan choices.

B1-K2-W1-W4 REALISATION

I’ve worked in Indesign in a 12 colom grid because thats the grid we use for the DSM website. Photoshop was a big part of this process too because I made mock-ups and edited the pictures to fit them in with the Harlees brand.

B1-K2-W5 DIGITAL ARCHIVE

At DSM they use a big server where they keep all of their work on. Because I was still working on my laptop I didn’t have acces to the server and I had to keep my own archive. I used my own map structure for Harlees.

MISTAKES, PROBLEM SOLVING AND WHAT I’VE LEARNT

I’ve learned alot about the basics of websdesign. Barry took me through alot of information about that subject only there is still so much to learn. While designing I made it all in one file. This made me trying to get everything perfect right away and deleting thing I didn’t like. Brett told me that it would be way easier to make multiple files and do different designs on them. This would give me more ideas and then I would be able to take the best thing I liked from every file and make it into my final design. This will make you see what works and what not in a  faster way.
